Learn More About Logo Design

Why Is Professional Logo Design Important?

A logo is to a business as your face is to you. It is how you are recognized. It reflects your personality, or in case of your business, your values and principles. It is also the most powerful marketing tool known.

Logo design establishes your identity.
It is very hard to establish yourself in the marketing world without a logo. In layman’s terms, a logo is like a mental shortcut to a product or company. Just how often do you recognize a car from its make, rather than the ever present logo on the bumper or in front? The power of the logo lies in its visual nature. Studies have shown that people recognize and relate to images faster then text. In today’s world of multimedia, this rings more true then ever.

Having just any logo, however, is not enough to create a brand identity for you. A badly thought up logo can very easily destroy the image of your company. On the other hand, a carefully designed logo can reach the buying public and communicate to them the worth of your company or product. Therefore, everything depends on the design of your logo.

Your logo creates your image
In the corporate world, “Image” is everything. A marketing company may like their Logo to be bold, so as to reflect aggressiveness, which is often what a client wants in such companies. On the other hand, an Insurance company’s logo would in all probably reflect solidity and dependability, and use that to draw in customers.

However, the market is flooded with Logos, from the corner of a news paper to the moving scroll bar at the bottom of your television screen. It is absolutely necessary, therefore, for a logo to have a meaning, to present something specific and unique to the subconscious mind of the consumer, to set it apart from the rest of the competition.

Your logo solidifies consumer loyalty.
The work of a Logo goes on even after your Identity and Image has been established. Part of a logo’s effectiveness comes from repetition. As it is known in the business community, familiarity is the key to growing your business. In corporate world, it’s called consumer loyalty or brand loyalty.

Once your logo has established consumer loyalty, your next step will be see it repeated as often as possible. Each time your company or any product or service of your company, is mentioned anywhere, your logo should accompany it. Soon, even a glimpse of a part of that logo will be sufficient for your client to relate to your company.

Your logo is your most powerful marketing tool
With careful marketing, a Logo can become the main reason for sale of a company’s product. For instance, the brand Nike has a tremendous loyalty. It has become a status symbol of sorts, cashing on the image “the best money can buy”. Nike’s marketing strategy has been to associate popular and successful sport persons with the brand, establishing the company as makers of top quality professional sports gear.

Your logo establishes ownership
A logo is like a signature. It proves your legal ownership and is a legal safe guard against fakes and forgeries. Cheap forgeries of branded product are flooding the markets in the third world countries. For instance, you can get a cheap sneaker with a logo somewhat similar to Nike’s logo, which can boost the sale of that fake. However, is a company reproduces your logo to the
tee, you can sue the company is consumer court.

So invest the time in developing a GREAT logo and look after it – you (and your business) will reap the rewards!

Webclick Logo Design Process

A successful logo is simple and representative of the company it stands for. A strong logo takes time, money and effort to create. Designing a small visual representation of an entire company can be a daunting task, but if the process is done correctly, a logo can be a very effective marketing device. All creative professionals have different workflow systems, and there are many different paths that lead to a successful end point; but the general sequence of the process is usually the same. Webclick follow a 7-step process in Logo design.

1. Client discovery
A great logo is an expression of the company values, culture and people. We kick-off logo design projects with some good, quality conversations with the client. Our aim is to learn as much as possible about the company culture, values and the way they do business, and then inject that message when they design a logo.

2. Industry discovery
Once you get to know the client, you’ll need to find out more about:
who is the logo for (the audience) and Who you’re up against (the competition)? Knowing the audience will give us some clues as to where you need to take the logo, style wise. For example, if you’re working for a teenage market, you’ll probably need something mainstream, loud and catchy. But if your teenagers are wunderkinds who dig computer programming, you may need to think harder.

The second, and perhaps more important part of this process is researching our client’s competition. You need to see who else is out there and how their logos look, so you avoid doing something similar, or worse — doing something identical.

3. Application discovery
This phase is about answering one simple question: how and where will the logo be used most of the time? Different usage of the logo is typically referred to as “logo application.” This is really essential for the logo design process because it tells the designer what can and cannot be done from a design point of view.

Airline companies need their logos visible on tail fins – an important thing to consider before jumping to the design stage. For example, airline companies demand a very specific type of logo application, where a logo has to be placed on the tail fin of the airplane. That is a very tall and narrow space to work with, so designers will have to avoid ideas that do not fit there, or develop separate graphics that will be used for that purpose.

Another example are web-based companies, who do most of their business online. In this case, designers might decide to use full RGB spectrum for the logo, because digital devices have no problems with that and it might help the logo stand out. On the other hand, this would be a very bad choice for a company who does business offline and has to print a lot of stuff.

4. Sketching
Did you know that some design schools ask the students to come up with exactly 100 ideas before they decide on the right one? The reason is simple — the only way to separate the good from the bad is to have a lot of things to pick from. Because of this simple truth, we offer logo design from different designers and concepts.

5. Draft designs
After we are done with the sketching process, we pick some of our best ideas and create some initial designs then present them to the client for initial review. The main objective is to get client feedback on our rough ideas and identify the ones they’d like to refine.

6. Refinement
The refinement stage is the longest one because it involves a lot of back and forth regarding the improvements and changes for the presented logo drafts. Sometimes the client will pick just one idea for refinement — sometimes he’ll run two or three in parallel just to see where they go. But here’s where the fun happens.

Colors, details and various bells and whistles are added, changed and thrown away during logo refinement stage. Various application mockups are developed to see how the logo will perform in different situations — sometimes a logo detail on paper doesn’t really work well on a building. Ultimately, the final logo is chosen, approved and prepared for identity development.

7. Identity development
As you can imagine, a great logo is not the end but the beginning of a great brand identity. Business stationery, signage, vehicle branding and many other communication tools have to be designed so they all send a unified brand message. Identity development makes that happen.

During this stage, all important logo applications are designed and standardized in a brand guidelines book, known simply as “brand book.” Identity devlopment takes the logo further and defines visual standards for all commonly used marketing and promotional tools.

This book shows how to work with the logo and prescribes standard layout, color, imagery and typography guidelines for common marketing materials. This way companies make sure their identity is protected and guided by the same principles even when they switch designers or agencies.

Note while the identity development stage is optional, it is usually offered as a part of the total identity design package — most clients want to standardize at least business stationery and signage.

As you can see, the professional logo design process is a rather serious business involving seven distinct stages, all with an aim to create a unique, memorable symbol that adds value to the company and makes it stand out in the market.

What Logo Design Services Include

Below is a list of deliverables we give to our clients. You can refer to the pricing table above for more details.

File formats

We deliver a variety of file formats to our clients. Whether you are printing high quality, adding a logo to a website, or inserting your company logo into a Word document, there are various file formats that should be used over the other.

eps: An EPS file, or Encapsulated PostScript file, is a versatile vector format of your logo. In other words, you can resize your logo as big or small as needed without compromising the quality of the logo. EPS is compatible in a large number of programs and is great for use with printed elements due to its high quality.

What’s it suitable for?

  • Business cards
  • Brochures
  • Advertisements
  • …anything that will be printed of high quality

jpg and gif

Although it cannot be scaled to a desired size like that of an EPS, JPGs and GIFs are great and preferred for internet use. Due to their smaller file size, they load faster on the web and still look ‘sharp’ to the eye when viewed on a computer monitor. We tend to create these files a little larger than most so that our clients are able to downsize as needed.

What’s it suitable for?

  • Websites
  • Online Ads and Banners
  • Email marketing and signatures
  • anything ‘web-related’

tiff

A TIFF, or Tagged Image File Format, is a widely supported file format that works in just about any program. A TIFF is of higher quality than JPG or GIF, but not vector-formatted like an EPS. Typically when sending TIFFs to clients we try to create them at a larger size, so if needed they can resize down or stay with the larger size for more versatility. In certain cases, these can also be used for higher quality prints, granted they were created at 300 dpi and don’t need to resized larger than delivered.

What’s it suitable for?

  • Microsoft Office programs
  • Standard printing for common use (ie. invoices, letterheads, etc.)
  • Email marketing and signatures
  • anything ‘web-related’

Full Color

This should need no explanation, but we provide our clients with a full colored, CMYK file for the printed file formats (EPS, TIFF) and RGB for the web formats (JPG, GIF). This way they don’t experience strange color issues when printing and will save them money with their printers.

Black and Reversed Logos

A well designed logo should not only work in color but also in black and white (reversed-out) versions.

Favicon / iPhone / iPad icons

Many designers do not do this, but we’ve always felt like it added a nice touch to our logo services — something that makes us different from the next guy. Besides, as a web design agency, we know the value of favicon.

A favicon, or “little logo” that appears in the corner of the address bar in a web browser, is a great way to compliment their logo on the web. Also, with the rise of mobile browsing have a iPhone and iPad optimized icon is a nice touch as well.
